D-Day Cyclone to be demolished

Cyclone to be demolished

Demolition contractors D & M of Oldham arrived at Pleasureland, Southport at 9:00am this morning (Monday 20th November 2006) to demolish the Cyclone.

The work is expected to be completed within three weeks time. A six-foot metal fence is to be erected around the site to deter any demonstrators.

A spokesperson for the contractors said: “Its unfortunate but we are only doing a job, the sheds and wooden structure is rotten”.

Pictured is Dennis of D & M)

At about 11:00am this morning Peter Crompton gave a document to site manager Lynne Walker that explained about a licience that was required to demolish the cyclone.

Lynne pretends to read the document, but demolition work goes ahead.

At about 3:00pm this afternoon the demolition work started

Dr Travis (CBA Northwest Vice Chair) was contacted by David Cam and Amanda Thomson (Blackpool Pleasure Beach) last week saying that he would be allowed on site to record the cyclone demolition. Dr Travis today said:"Obviously they told an untruth to me"

It is possible that there are protected species hibernating on site. There should be an ecological survey next spring. It is possible the law is being broken.

If the structure is so rotten, why was it being used until the day of closure? Is BPB saying that they knowingly put people at risk riding Cyclone?

In fact this is a pile of porkies - there is only a small amount of cosmetic damage, the rest of the structure, I have been assured, is in perfect condition.

We need a last stand down there to stop them from killing all those animals while they're working. I suggest everyone who's interested gets down there and contact radio, tv and newpapers to bring about the negative publicity BPB so badly deserve. I can think of very few things worse than being trampled on in your sleep, it's absolutely appalling to think that they are doing this knowingly!

As EAS says this ride was in operation until the day of closure - therefore the structure can not be rotten - unless BPB knowingly endangered lives. I doubt this very much - because what ever else I may think, I can not see them being that foolish. Therefore the struction is obviously sound, and should be left until an ecological survey is carried out in the spring.

It must always be borne in mind that the natterjack is a protected species - and there is a possibilty that they are under the cyclone and therefore the site should not be disturbed until this can either be established or disproved.

Considering the weather it has been subjected to, I am actually quite surprised at how good that timber looks (in fact it looks NEW).

If the structure were rotten it would look a lot worse than it does at this moment.

wellimustbedead says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 11:23 AM
The only wood on the Cyclone that has become rotten is the pieces of wood that are purely cosmetic. The actual structure of the cyclone is perfectly safe and was in brilliant condition right up until the last day of Pleasureland's operation. I suspect that they are using this as one of many excuses to tear it down from the Southport skyline and I fear that many of the protected species we know to be under there will die in the process.

UPDATE

The demolition machine got stuck at the entrance gates.

Sheer brute force prevailed in the end.

southport has been well stitched up by blackpool pleasure beach. people of southport who are bothered you can help to make bpb lose finances. i ask you never to step foot on blackpool pleasure beach, there are plenty of other amusement parks which will give you a better day out.

blackpool bosses go f##k yourselves

wellimustbedead says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 12:00 PM
unfortunately BPB may not be ran by the same people soon. If the rumours I've heard are true (which persistant rumours like this usually are) then there is a takeover in place because Amanda Thompson's not only screwed up Pleasureland but also the rest of the group of companies as well. But yes, I for one will never be stepping foot in there whilst any of the profits are going into "that woman's" pockets

EAS says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 12:08 PM
I have spoken to PC Fairbrother, who assures me that BPB's Company Secretary (David Cam?) was notified of the company's responsibilities regarding the possibility of protected species on site in September. I have assured PC Fairbrother that in my view there is some reasonable evidence to suggest that natterjack toads, a protected species, may be on site.

It is clear that BPB is not going to take any notice of that. The demolition contractors may of course be breaking the law.

I understand thet Mrs Thompson (Amanda's mother) is a JP and an MBE.

PC Fairbrother cannot enter the premises, it is up to BPB to comply with the law. The paperwork is available via the DEFRA website.

"protected species"

Give it a miss you are grasping at straws!

EAS says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 12:56 PM
I have an e-mail from the national conservation body for species such as natterjacks to say that there is strong evidence of a likelihood that they are on site, as there is a large established colony nearby.

I reckon that they are all busy with other things like falling out over windmills in Norwood area.

http://www.southportforums.com/foru....php?t=50367570

Pughy, Lord Ron and the rest of the crew have it seems disappeared from view again. One would not want to let anything stand in the way of progress and the Classic Resort would one?

And as for protected species – I’m not sure about the newts but I feel sure that the natterjack will be present as it is all along this coast so YES any habitat disturbance will be definitely illegal.

CycloneDave says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 01:18 PM
This is all utter bollocks, how can the ride possibly be 'rotten' and dangerous' when people rode it happily until the day it closed?! Bunk! Clearly, it has been proven that it is safe! Once again BPB have made total fools of themselves, if it is safe why make all this fuss and trash it, and if it was not safe, like someone has already said, they have knowingly endangered lives for months and must be punished!

EAS says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 01:22 PM
But they won't be, will they?

Once it's gone it's hard to say if it was or wasn't a danger.

But natterjacks are a real possibility.

If others call Sefton Council - it's your council - and PC Fairbrother it would be useful...

It mat be worth pointing out to the contractor he may be breaking the law. PC Fairbrother has already told BPB of itsresponsibilities under the Countryside and Wildlife Act.

BPB are not interested in Southport they are only trying to line their pockets, with pleasureland gone I bet they are rubbing their hands together, I will never ever go to c*appool, they are theiving rogues

EAS says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 01:36 PM
It's the last of its type in the country - important historically, although there are always those who are Philistine enough not to recognise that.

This is a sad day for anyone who cares about heritage.

The Cyclone has only become an eyesore because it has been neglected over the years. With a lick of paint and a grateful owner it can go back to being a thing of beauty as it has been for the better part of a century......and to be fair, it's still quite appealing now!

EAS says: Mon 20th Nov 2006, 01:51 PM
Last time I saw it, two weeks ago, it looked from the road absolutely splendid.

Under it runs the River Caves - oldest in the country.

Sefton Council should have been informed about the demolition - notice has to be given - I wonder if indeed anyone has done this?
