I did a spell on private hire so have heard most of the stories before...

I've often thought the whole Hackney and parking/ranking etc needs sorting out.

It might not be popular with some drivers but the plates/rights should not be transferrable between owners. When someone retires there should be a waiting list. It would cause some problems initially but it would stop these sort of problems with cliques and 'closed shops' bullying and the like. This William Anker Murrison wouldn't have any empire building say then.

Quite a few times when i have arrived at southport station requiring a taxi i ve had to wait a while normaly end up having to phone for a private hire, and then sods law about 3/4 hackneys turn up if everyone could use it a much beter service to the customer would be provided.

The title of this thread should be changed immediately, to call Colin Roby a 'Dodgy Taxi Driver' using originally uncorroborated information is outrageous, particularly as he has now spoken to SGB and put the record straight. If I was him I would consider an urgent visit to my solicitor. I am also a Hackney Driver and have stopped and picked up on London Street many times when there have been no cabs ranked up. My advice therefore to any train passengers would be to simply walk to the edge of the pavement, I guarantee you wont have to wait long for a Hackney.

So have I got this right?

If he picks you up outside the station he's not insured, but if he picks you up from anywhere else he is?

Nashwan says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 12:07 AM
All you hackney owners/drivers complaining so vociferously on here about limited permits for the station rank are the same ones who complain (rightly so) about private hire drivers picking up off the street or parking where they are likely to get walk-up fares. Why is it unacceptable to you for the guys and gals on private hire to act in such a disrespectful way to those of you who have invested in a hackney plate, but perfectly alright for you to do the same with those who have invested that bit more in a hackney plate with a station permit attached to it? Hypocrites.

As for the station rank being a "closed shop", what nonsense! It is no more a "closed shop" than is the hackney trade itself. Plates become available from time to time (be they with or without a station permit) and everybody has the option to buy one as and when they do. Of course, it is far easier and cheaper to decide not to buy one and just get all steamed up like a dinner lady about not having the same access to ranks as those who are or were prepared to invest in their livelihood.

As for whether 31 permits is enough to satisfy the demand, why don't all of you who feel so hard done by put pressure on the hackney licensing authority to commission an independently carried out survey to see if there is any unmet demand. Or do you all find it easier to post juvenile comments on this forum?

With regards to customer waiting times, people only seem to remember the occasions when they have to wait for a taxi, whether it be on the station or anywhere else. No "disgruntled taxi user" ever spouts off on here about the numerous occasions they must have walked to a rank and seen a dozen cabs all waiting patiently for a fare. Always the negative. More often than not, people will have spent longer queueing to pay for their shopping than they do at a taxi rank.

In reply to Cabby and your query as to why so many wheelchair cabs get called to the station, I would remind you that wheelchair cabs get called to all the ranks to pick up, be it Sainsburys, the rank at the monument or the main rank. The station is a central location and also provides shelter whilst waiting so it makes sense to go there and wait. As for a lack of wheelchair-friendly vehicles with station permits, by my reckoning there are currently at least five.

As for the story as a whole, I feel it is unfortunate that it has been covered and given an opportunity for people to bad mouth us all again. Most of you really should know better.

And finally, as for the "dodgy taxi driver", if he feels so strongly about serving the public, wouldn't it be better if he went straight to a rank in town where he can offer his services rather than continually driving up and down London Street and Wright Street in a deliberate (and pathetically childish) attempt to antagonise those who have invested in a station permit?

cabby says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 12:25 AM
The fact is that a railway station is a public place so it should be open access. As for your comments about the survey, this was done just over a year ago and there was only one rank in sefton with un-met demand!

ANY GUESSES?

And as for wheelchair accesable cabs being called to other ranks, the vehicles on the other ranks do not claim to have divine rights. The station cabs want us to cover thier wheelchair jobs but not the rest. Fool!

Nashwan says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 01:02 AM
No, the station cabs do not want 'you' to cover 'their' wheelchair jobs. It is the 'customer' who wants a taxi and duly asks for one from wherever they want to wait, just as they do at Sainsburys for example. Whether they are at the station or elsewhere is irrelevant.

Regarding any unmet demand at the station, those who are keen to see a change really need to focus their efforts on getting a survey done which doesn't allow for any unmet demand at the station to be covered by a lack of demand elsewhere (basically, a survey carried out at the station and the station only). I doubt that any permit holder at the station would have grounds for complaint should any such survey find a need for x number of extra permits.

Private hire is the way to go, Hackney companies are rip off merchants.

Re the Southport Maffia:

!/ Could anyone explain the system of charges for both private hire & Hackney cabs.

2/ Why do some cabs switch the meter on as they approach my home

3/ does everyone tip the driver

4/ What is an average fair ammount to tip a cab.

5/ Does Joe public feel a cab driver is a lower grade of social strata than he or she by tipping him.

6/ I surpose the Inland Revenue penalise them for tips regardless of wether they get any or not.

coca says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 11:15 AM
just get the bus or walk taxi drivers are very dodgy they stink of fags are coverd in dog hair an charge u to much any way how can it cost £6.20 one day and £7.30 the next and you are going the same place the same way

Nashwan says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 11:22 AM
I am not sure, Peanuts, how you can claim that the hackney fares are a "rip off". If you are interested in facts, one of the private hire companies in Southport is cheaper than the hackney rate. The other two are exactly the same. Furthermore, there is no additional amount to pay for ordering a five-seater cab or hiring a five-seater at a rank, unlike if you order one from at least one of the private hire firms.

In reply to Headbolt:

1) See above. You are typically looking at a charge of £2.80 for the first mile and £1.20 for each additional mile thereafter. Waiting time can add to the total fare at a rate of 20p per minute. One of the private hire firms operate at slightly less than the above. ALL the fares in this town are cheap by national standards, with around two-thirds of the country having more expensive rates (considerably so in some parts) than the people of Sefton enjoy.

2) If you jump in a taxi (whether it be private hire or hackney) and see the meter is already running, take the drivers number and report him/her. You would be doing the trade as a whole a favour by doing so. A driver would be entitled to have his meter on only if you are keeping him waiting an unacceptable length of time.

3) Not everyone tips the driver.

4) You are free to tip whatever you wish. There is no upper limit. :D

5) I get the distinct impression that the public view your average Joe le Taxi as being a cross between Dick Turpin and Stig of the Dump. I suspect that people who don't tip taxi drivers for excellent service probably don't tip anyone for anything. Money is also tight for many people at the moment too.

6) I believe you are supposed to include any tips received as part of your income.

Coca, it is impossible for a hackney meter to hit exactly £7.30 on any tariff.

HEADBOLT says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 12:04 PM
Nashwan thanks for the sensible reply,

re question 4/ If every passenger gave for instance a 00:25p tip would the driver be better or worse off.

re question 6/ some service industry personel have their taxable allowance pre-adjusted by the revenue presuming they get tips.
Is this the case with taxi drivers ?.

Nashwan says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 12:32 PM
Regarding question 4, Headbolt, I would say that a taxi driver receives a tip from around half of his/her passengers, depending of course on his/her luck on any given day. Would we be better off if 25p was automatically added to each fare in lieu of a tip? I would say no, because some passengers will stick a couple of quid on top of the fare as a tip and that, obviously, would cover eight journeys if "service were included".

As for question 6, I cannot give you a definite answer but my understanding from many years ago was that all tips were to be included in the takings and subsequently declared. I'm sure all cabbies do so anyway.

>>You are typically looking at a charge of £2.80 for the first mile and £1.20 for each additional mile thereafter.>>

So why does it cost me (on the rare occasion I use a taxi) £3.25 or £3.50 for a four-fifths of a mile journey?

Stupot in answer to your question the meters in taxis work by TIME & DISTANCE which means if the taxi is stuck in traffic the meter will continue to rise as WAITING TIME.

The prices you are saying you are charged will not be in the day you would only ever get a £3.25 or £3.50 charge on tariff 2 which is after 11pm or bank holiday etc
TARIFF 1 CHANGES IN 20P STAGES & TARIFF 2 IN 25P STAGES
IN THE DAY YOU CAN NOT GET A £3.25 OR £3.50 IT COULD ONLY EVER BE £2.20, £2.40, £2.60, £2.80, £3.00 ETC ETC

Peanuts says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 06:30 PM
@ Nashwan - Well you've just proved me correct to say that hackneys are a rip-off! Thanks, I'm glad I only use all-whites. Last few times I got a hackney (which was about 2 years ago now) it was an absolute fortune, not to mention the drivers aren't as polite as the private hire drivers.

yellowdog says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 08:32 PM
Nashwan, your station pass doesn't belong to you,it belongs to southport station Taxi Assoc and Mr Murrison can take it off you any time he likes regardless of the fact you paid a lot of money for it.Five years ago all passes were registered in the drivers' individual names but not any more.

itsamugsgame says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 09:05 PM
Taxi firms have always had a clique of people within the company who for whatever reason, think that they run everything.

The Yellowtops inbred idiots of years gone by were the Rimmers. A group of more ignorant individuals, pumped up on their own misguided self importance I have never met. They really were the saddest, most pathetic losers.

I have no doubt that the torch has been passed to some equally sorry individuals.

Not in the evening on clear roads and a direct run...:-)

Nashwan says: Sat 22nd Mar 2008, 10:31 PM
Stupot, your query was answered by Rover earlier. Your fare of £3.25 or £3.50 is obviously on the night-time rate (clock and a quarter). A one-mile journey (without any waiting time) on this rate is £3.50 so your fare is correct.

Yes Peanuts, we all know that All Whites are a bit cheaper than anyone else. If the fares of the other two private hire firms and the hackneys are a "rip off" in your opinion then fine. As I stated earlier, the rates people in this town pay for taxis are cheaper than two-thirds of the rest of the country.

Yellowdog, where did I state that I had a station pass?

when the cab is doing 7 mph or less then it goes on waiting time, above this and it is on milage.there is a number that is normaly on the left of the meter that says what tarrif you are on wether it be tarrif 1,2,3,when you are next in a cab of what ever firm you use just watch the tarrif indicator as when you are on waiting time it will flash all the time but as soon as you go over 7 mph it will stay on all the time so you know at what rate you are being charged,,,

Skichic says: Sun 23rd Mar 2008, 04:18 AM
Haven't read any of the previous posts apart from Scoobie's.

Just to say that I've noticed 544414 (not sure which company that is) seem to charge more that 537777 (not sure which company that is either!)

The taxi's on Southport Station provide an excellent service and are ALL lovely men and women who would bend over backwards to help anyone. Im "sure" this man was just doing a service but at the end of the day it is stealing work from other people who pay for the priviledge and that is just wrong.
