The Drifters

Tonight The Drifters appeared at Tarleton Bowling Club
Pedoja,
Iwatched The Driftrs at the Soutport Theatre years ago ,the lead
singer then died some years ago Ithink his name was Johnny Moore, are they as good now
So Tarleton Bowling Club has now become some sort of mega-venue in Southport (at £17 a head that's mega-venue prices) - wow- that does not say much for Southport/Sefton's tourism strategy - after all Tarleton is part of Lancashire County - Pat
Pedoja,
Isaw Tom Jones at the Ahoy in Rotterdam last year ,he was well worth the money you paid for a ticket .Igot a ticket for half the price because a friend of someone Iknow could not make it ,Iwas made up ,Ihad a fantastic night, there was six of us Irecommend
that if you ever get the chance to see him ,
go with a group of friends and dance the night away,Idid.
Nell
I saw Tom Jones last summer too, in an open-air concert in Hyde Park in London...I wasn't really a fan before, but I have to say he was brilliant live. I really enjoyed myself.
BABS
I have to disagree with what you said about Tom Jone's I think he look's great for his age,he's a bit like Cliff Richard ,for mother's and daughter's.There are not many of these singer's left,o.k Tom
wiggle's his hip's ,but if you see the group's they have now Ithink a lot of them are a bad impression for our children.Where are those nice love song's we used to hear many year's ago, also
the good dance record's?Give me the 60's and 70's music anytime.
Bab's love who do you like?
Imust admit Cliff is not one of my fav's but you have to admit he is a nice guy.
One of my fav's is ,wait for it ...........................................?
Babs....so you don't like Tom Jones ?....It's not unusual......Nell. My other half is a big fan of Norman Wisdom too ..so you are not alone:) ... We.saw him at the local theatre a couple of years ago ,what a guy for his age ...Ged
Hippy, dippy, trippy, dopey, - yeah all the way through the mid-70s (10 years too late) - Dozy (Git) Chad -
- by the way, give Joe the 'handle' to this website maybe he can make a crazee contibution
The only link to the origonal Drifters is some of the music as they began in 1953 with Clyde McPhatter as the star man. he was drafted in 1954 and went solo on his return.
The Leiber and Stoller produced stuff was good as they make everyone good but a group called "The Five Crowns" became the Drifters around 1958 and with frequent changes became a "Cabaret and nostagia " group. Ben E King was in them twice.
As for Tom Jones well he modelled himself on his hero (And Mine) Chuck Jackson, who was a Black recording artist on Wand records. Chuck is currently working as a Stevedore on the Docks but gets invited over to the UK every couple of years by some Soul Enthusiasts. I filmed Chuck live at Great yarmouth six years ago.
Tom Jones makes my skin crawl ! He reminds me of a D .O .Man
As for Babs saying that the Drifters were playing at two locations at the same time, I can believe it. In 1967 The Invitations toured as The Temptations in the UK and many other bands were doing the same thing from the USA . Who would know the difference ?
I went to watch New York act "The Spellbinders" at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester in the late sixties. The following night I went to the Blue Note down the road and saw the same band except they were called the "Velvelettes"
Cliff Richard was OK on "Oh Boy" and Six Five Special were he debuted with a band called the Drifters (Who had to change their name to the Shadows). He has changed a lot since then !
This page is now in danger of becoming Southport Past (which is fine by me) - just to keep it in the 'News' for you punters, soon you will be treated to the delights of these lot - who are all 'real' (as Chas will testify) - no they're not on at the Tarleton Bowls Club - the Southport Theatre (ex-Floral Hall?) is still the place to be - 24 May (week after NY) up your way (they're in Brum next weekend but I'll be in Oz) - not that I'll be rushing to see 'em mind - [didn't someone on the Someplace Else page have a real downer on Freda Page's Band of Gold?] - see yer soon y'all -Chad
Martha, Edwin and Freda are all real but Martha does not look like that anymore. Martha has treated the rest of the Vandellas really bad and is not a very nice person.
Chuck Jackson has fallen on hard times so I doubt if he will appear on these shores but his stablemate Maxine Brown will be here next year . Rod Stewart keeps covering her songs.
Rod is on tour in the summer but sorry he is not coming to Southport - the nearest he gets is Manchester Evening News Arena (wherever that is) on Wednesday 26th June (I have developed this habit of coming up to Southport on that following weekend for some weird reason) - OK I'll shut up now and s-d off to Australia.
See yer - Aboriginal Chad
Getting back to the tour Chad posted up, it is not recommended as people I know said that only Edwin Starr was any good when they went to watch the show last week.
