ABC Cinema Closes in Southport
Sun 5th Jan 2003, 06:12 PM
Reported by: onthespot
Today the ABC Cinema on Lord Street Closed it's door's for the final time. Staff and ex staff members dressed up in fancy dress for this occasion.

Staff waved farewell to the public from the ABC Cinema roof this afternoon ( 5/1/03 )

The building has been sold to a company called Luminar who plan to open one of their phenomenally successful Chicago Rock Cafes.

Staff members pose for photographs inside the staff room.

No more ironing!

Local regulars to the ABC Cinema are Laura Cain (left) Emma Harding & Katie Quinn who each recieved a signed T- Shirt, sweets and posters from staff members.

Pictured together are staff & locals.

It's the end of an era for projectionist (chief tech) Wayne Hannon.

A projectionist view from his room, note the last film showing through the glass.

Upstairs foyer

Entrance to the Cinema downstairs.

Chicago Rock Cafe is a restaurant and bar that trades all day until late, with DJ and dancefloor. This venue will aparently offer a dining, dancing and drinking environment in an American style surround. The music policy is a retrospective Classic Hits from 1957 to 1995.

Its a shame the cinema had to close, the last time I went there were only 9 customers in the place and the satff were all sat at the back talking loudly throughout the film.
Its a shame they couldnt keep one screen and have the bar as well, so you could watch a film and eat and drink. I have been in a few bars which show films, foreign films with subtitles or well known ones are best.

Yeah foreign films with subtitles! Im sure that would really bring in the punters ;) . Maybe they should play music from the 1940`s too??

Aanyway good to see the old cinema closed down for good. The Mrs may needs a new Job, so lets turn it into a big club or a themed bar.....

mike do you go to the cinema much? never heard of Amelie? Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown? Open Your Eyes? Amores Perros? Three Colours Blue? Taxi? Seven Samurai? Kagemusha? Enter the Dragon? Life Is Beautiful?

there is more to cinema than the Hollywood pulp you will get at the multiplex.

Got to agree with you on that one Redstarline. Unfortunately it doesn't appeal to the masses. People would be amazed how many English language films are actually inferior remakes of foreign language films.

You missed two of my faves on your list..... Das Boot & Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Last time i went in there with my daughter they seemed to condone the most appalling behaviour - kids running up and down the aisles all through the film, shouting and swearing, throwing sweets about. I swore i would never go again and i have been true to my word.

The screens were small, seats uncomfortable and sound system useless.

Having been unemployed myself in the past I feel for the individual members of staff and hope they get re-employed soon.

But the place will probably be preserved much better once it is being used for a purpose which its owners think will pay - and incidentally give the only decent family-friendly place in town where you can get a drink served too.

There are pllenty of decent things to inspire nostalgia in this town - To each their own obviously.

I'd like to add "Cinema Paradiso" to the list of films mentioned here - not only is it one of my favourite films of all time, it is also quite appropriate in this case.
