This evening CARES took the campaign for the reinstatement of Southport’s lost children’s and maternity services to a higher level. John Reid, Secretary of State for Health was dining at Formby Hall Golf Club and CARES were there to make sure that the feelings and resentment felt in Southport at the closure of our children’s and maternity services was top of the menu.

CARES campaigners, Mark Bigley, Bill Givens, Cath Regan and Angela Weatherby were joined by protestors from Fazackerley who were protesting against closures there. All protestors had been assured of an interview with John Reid, but as soon as he arrived he took the decision not to meet them.
Campaigners designated to the car park. They were told John Reid would listen to their views, unfortunately they were snubbed!
Mark Bigley, CARES campaigner said: “It is an absolute disgrace that John Reid did not remain true to his word and come and listen to the concerns of Southport residents. 3,000 people have taken to the streets in protest, organised by CARES, nearly 20,000 have signed the petition, organised by CARES and the Southport Visiter, and John Reid cannot spare a couple of minutes to listen. That is typical of this Government and this health secretary. We will take the campaign to London next week.”
Onthespot was classed as a security risk by Sgt Dave Corcoran (Merseyside Police) and was asked to leave or be ejected from the premises. John Daley a photographer for the Post & Echo (pictured below left) was allowed to photograph the Minister whilst he was on the visit.
The nearest southport.gb.com got to Dr Reid was by Taxi!
