Animal Liberation Supporters at Tesco
Mon 12th Jan 2004, 08:37 AM
Reported by: onthespot
Animal liberation supporters have targeted tescos store. Over the weekend a number of animal supporters placed labels on packs of Iams dog and cat food, advising customers to boycott this brand as the liberation supporters believe Iams conduct various experiments on animals.

Is your pet food killing cats and dogs

A PETA investigator spent nine months inside a laboratory that conducts experiments on dogs and cats for pet food manufacturers including IAMS/Eukanaba.

The PETA investigator witnessed neglect and mismanagement that made the lives of these animals a nightmare. Dogs in some studies were made to live in cages with slatted metal flooring so they couldn’t stand up comfortably and their legs frequently fell through the slats. One dog’s legs were so badly cut to the bone when they slipped through the slats. She was left without treatment or even painkillers for six agonizing days until employees killed her.

A shy frightened dog developed a mammary tumor that was so swollen and painful that she cried when touched. The tumor and a serious infection was diagnosed but never treated, despite requests from the PETA investigator, she suffered for 42 days, every hour a misery before being destroyed.

A cat had a large cut on its chin. Rather that treats the wound an employee called the cat evil and sprayed an antibiotic through the cage bars, making the cat gag and salivate. The wound never healed, but when the veterinary technicians were ordered to euthanasia him immediately they left five days pass before bothering to do so.

I read about these experiments in National Newspapers about 18 months ago. In the main the experiments consisted of operations on cats and dogs to determine whether their digestivesystems coped with the types of products that IAMS were making. Investigators reported things like the removal of kidneys from cats to see if they developed urinary problems etc. There was an outcry at the time and an investigation was promised.
IAMS at one time could only be purchased through veterinary approved outlets now you see it being displayed on supermarket shelves, no doubt encouraging more unsuspecting members of the public to buy it.
My cats were on IAMS and I haven't bought it since , they get Royal Canin now. Eukanuba are part of the same group, they were investigated too.
I am puzzled as to why the animal liberators have taken so long to pick up on this. I still await the result of the investiagtion into
these disgusting and distressing practices.

I have just e-mailed IAMS to ask them what's going on. Purina and all the other brands might be doing the same kind of testing. Who knows?

To Emily and any-one else who is outraged at the barbaric cruelty imposed on animals, please log on to uncaged.co.uk. You will find all the proof you need. At one time I could not believe that human beings could be so cruel but after seeing photo's and reports, I know that this does happen. Perhaps when you read some of the stories from uncaged you may want to get involved like my husband and myself by writing letters of protest etc. The more people involved, the sooner this cruelty will stop.

If you want to feed your animals an alternative food you can contact burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk They do not do animal testing and they deliver to your door.

I have just received a reply to my e-mail from IAMS and here is part of it:

Dear Rae:

Thank you for sharing your opinion regarding our animal research policy. I share my life with a dog and a cat, and I can understand the feelings that compelled you to write to us. Please take a moment to review the following information.

On March 25, we learned that nutritional studies being conducted for us at an independent facility in the U.S. may have violated our company's strict research policy. On March 26, we completed an unannounced visit of the facility to review procedures and ensure the well-being of dogs and cats at the site.

On March 27, we concluded that the facility did not meet our strict standards regarding air temperature, ventilation, resting beds, and socialization (even though the facility recently passed U.S. government inspections). We made the decision to end all research at the facility.

In addition, we worked with the facility to relocate Fifi, Maisy, Mickey, and the 16 other dogs to an Iams animal care center. We have an established program for socialization and employee adoption that will give these dogs the opportunity for a successful transition to a family.

On April 10, we met with PETA to look over the facts and to share our plan for the review of our contract research facilities.

We have now completed comprehensive reviews of all external facilities involved in dog and cat nutritional studies for Iams. This was a major effort which included Iams researchers, P&G veterinarians, non-technical Iams employees who
served as the "eyes and ears" of our consumers, and where possible, independent
animal welfare experts.

All of the facilities reviewed comply with government regulations, and the health of the dogs and cats is not at risk. However, we've decided to consolidate our nutritional studies at fewer contract facilities, and we will focus more on the implementation of our high standards for dog and cat care.

In addition, we are pleased to announce that we have established an International Animal Care Advisory Board to evaluate our industry-leading research policy and advise us on new research alternatives that provide for advanced levels of dog and cat care.

The Iams International Animal Care Advisory Board, an independent group, currently consists of seven members, representing various disciplines and fields of study, including veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, behavior, welfare,
and ethics. They are:

* Mr. Michael Arms of the Helen Woodward Animal Center (a leading California-based shelter and adoption facility).
* Dr. Kathryn Bayne of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).
* Rev. Kenneth Boyd, a professor of Medical Ethics at Edinburgh University Medical School, and a research director of the Institute of Medical Ethics, Edinburgh, Scotland.
* Dr. Stephen Hansen of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
* Dr. Robert Hubrecht of The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW).
* Dr. Irene Rochlitz, an independent veterinary consultant in feline welfare, Cambridge, England.
* Dr. Andrew Rowan of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

The Advisory Board's first task will be to conduct a comprehensive review of The Iams Company research policy and steps taken to implement that policy since it was last updated in June 2002. The Board will also establish a series of next steps and recommendations. In addition to work with our Board members, we are actively seeking the perspective of other animal welfare consultants.

The formation of this board was a top priority for us and a major step in our continued efforts to enhance the health and well-being of dogs and cats around the world. While we already have an industry-leading policy on nutritional studies - which requires that our research be equivalent to nutritional and medical studies acceptable on people - we believe even more can be done.

If you would like to read about our research policy in more detail, it is posted on our website at:

http://www.iams.com/en_US/jhtmls/fa...S&pagetypeid=FQ

(or go to www.iamsco.com and access this document
through the horizontal navigation bar by clicking onto News/Stories.)

We are deeply committed to dog and cat well being, and our research policy reflects that commitment. We hope you will reconsider purchasing Iams and will share this message with your friends.

Sincerely,
Cindy Achor

The reply you got from Iams is identical to the one I got months ago, and I do not believe one word of it. Certain animal rights people have worked there undercover and have had to watch the cruelty and murder of these animals while unable to do anything for them, only report their findings. Iams also mention Proctor And Gamble who in the opinion of any animal rights activist are the most cruel of all in their treatment of animals in their "experiments". We would like as many people as possible to boycott all P&G products. There are very good alternatives. Please help stop this cruelty.

It's extremely disturbing to find out that this type of thing is going on. I don't feed my dog on either Iams or Eukanuba products. If I did, I would certainly switch brands after hearing about this.

As Smithy states, other major pet food manufacturers could be using similar testing procedures. How can we find out about that? I'm specifically interested in Purina, as that's the brand I use.

conishead says: Tue 13th Jan 2004, 03:37 PM
I have been on to Purina pet foods who are part of the Nestles group. I asked if they did any testing on animals, but I cannot get a direct answer which makes me very suspicious. If you have any doubts don't forget Burns pet food. My dog thrives on it and they do not do any tests on animals. Have a look at their website, it's very informative and they give you straight answers to any question. Hope this helps.

My husband has just pointed out a paragraph in Peta magazine about Purina pet foods. Quote: ' The Nestle' Purina Company has paid experimenters to infect beagle puppies with heartworm, give dogs urinary tract infections and induce renal disease.' unquote.
At least we know now.

seivad says: Tue 13th Jan 2004, 06:30 PM
Thanks for that information Conishead. I have just Emailed Burns to ask them where I can buy their products in my area of Canada. I have no intention of contributing to the profits of any company that treats dumb animals in this way.
