Accident Portland St - Motorist Trapped In Car
Fri 30th Jan 2004, 01:23 AM
Reported by: onthespot
At approximately 10.35 pm last night Thursday 29th January a red Ford mondeo saloon collided with a Scimitar sports car at the junction of Portland Street and St James St Southport.

Pictured below was the scene.

The emergency services arrived at the scene within minutes. The driver of the Scimitar, a male aged approximately 30-years-old became trapped in his vehicle after impact.

Police diverted traffic away from the accident scene as paramedics attended to man's injuries. Fire fighters cut the trapped motorist from the wreckage.

The trapped motorist sustained serious chest injuries during the accident. The passenger from the Scimitar suffered minor arm injuries. Both were taken to Southport & Formby Hospital in separate ambulances.

Three people from the Mondeo absconded from the scene. Police are making enquiries.

Pictured is front end damage sustained to Ford.

Damage to the Scimitar.

Cut away car parts lie on the pavement.

This was a really bad smash, anyone know how the driver of the scimitar is???

I watched the firemen and paramedics through this whole incident, and would just like to say how brilliant they all were. It's great to see such real proffesionals in action.

Well done fellas, keep up the good work. :)

Your comments are very much appreciated!

The injured guy we cut free was taken to hospital with very serious chest injuries and suffering the effects of shock. We tried to find out how he was doing this morning (Friday) but were unable to get through.

Note the sign situated on the wall behind the car...

"will customers park vehicles correctly for the benefit of pedestrians"

:D

Maxla says: Fri 30th Jan 2004, 04:08 PM
I think its awful the other driver did a runner.

Iwonder if the car was stolen, or the driver was drunk??:(

Well done cocksquirter for all your hard work. You must train very hard to work so smoothly as a team with the paramedics.

Does the fire brigade train together with paramedics for this sort of thing?

I noticed the sign too!

"will customers park vehicles correctly for the benefit of pedestrians"
:D :D :D

Hope the driver of the scimitar gets well very soon.
I also I think its awful the other driver and 2 passengers did a runner:mad:

What is a Scimitar sports car and what does it usually look like?

Willow says: Fri 30th Jan 2004, 05:38 PM
Maxla

We rearly train with the Paramedics who are based at our station, probably because we are both so busy. Although when we do work with them we usually work well together. We normally train for RTA's on our own at the station.

A Scimitar sports car is a TVR kit car which you would build yourself. Its made of fibre glass which made things difficult as we couldn't use cutting gear as the fibre glass would have just shattered.

The Scimitar suffered side impact damage to the drivers door, and if you look you'll see that the Scimitar came off considerably better... although the driver didn't.

COCKSQUIRTER....

Do the fire brigade and the para`s have a policy for patient confidentialatey?

I know the nhs are red hot on the issue!

Not trying to be funny like,as i think you do a marvelous job ,but if i was in an acident or in my hour of need ,i wouldnt like it to be on southport.com or even spoke about as southport is a very little place.....

I know also some people cant hold there own water and cant wait to tell people of other peoples mis fortunes.;)

Willow says: Fri 30th Jan 2004, 05:55 PM
Dont know about the Para's but we'll use our own judgement. Its commen sense really.

I personnaly wouldn't go into detail about injuries sustained, nor, I dont think would any of the Para's or any of the other lads/lasses on the watches!

We have a black humour in the Fire Service, as i'm sure the Ambo's and Police do! People who dont have anything to do with the Fire Service/Ambulance/Police, and they come across this humour may think its offending, racist or whatever, but its not!!! Its our way of dealing with things and enable's us to get on with things.

For instance, we never noticed that sign until the guy had taken away in the ambulance. It was actually Taff who noticed it and as soon as everyone saw it, it was absolutly brilliant :D :D :D

buddy 1 says: Fri 30th Jan 2004, 06:16 PM
I am a nurse at sdgh , and i know just were you are coming from there.

AS we deal with some heartbreaking case`s just like yourselfs and we have to face it and cope with it the best we can,
as at the end of the day we are only human.

Maxla says: Fri 30th Jan 2004, 06:28 PM
Cocksquirter..... I would love to be a firefighter and work with all you hunks, but as a female, and a short one at that, I dont suppose they would have me.

Although having said that, your fire chief (in the white hat.... your chief, yeah?) seemed to have very little legs:)

Maybe I could wear boots with high heels, eh?:D

Willow says: Fri 30th Jan 2004, 08:15 PM
:D :D :D :D

Boots with high heels.... now your talkin girl! ;) Although they do pinch a little round the ankle, and climbing ladders is a nightmare!

The guy in the white hat is our Station Officer. There was also an Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO) called to the scene as it was a 'persons trapped'.

Regarding becoming a Firefighter... depends how small you are? There are currently female firefighters going through their recruits course at the moment, who are on the petite side.

Maxla says: Fri 30th Jan 2004, 10:08 PM
Unfortunately, cocksquirter, I reckon I am just a bit TOO petite.

AAaaaaaahhhhh, welll, never mind, I reckon I will just stick to what I am best at and leave all the important stuff to you super heroes.

Have you been a fireman for long? It must be a brill and very rewarding job. You must be very proud of what you do ( you should be!)

Keep up the brill work mate.

the driver of the ford mondeo and passengers all fled the seen of the accident, leaveing the 2 occupents of the scimitar trapped inside the twisted wreck . The drivers of the red mondeo are the lowest of the low. 2 poor men left to be cut free by firebrigade ,it sickens me .

John Pugh MP and local Lib Dem councillors from several wards, particularly Kew ward have some long-outstanding correspondence with the local police regarding priorities. In particular the needd to target the evening hours on certain roads (Shakespeare St being once such) wher there is persisitent speeding which goes undealt with. it seems silly that so many people are being prossecurted for being slightly over the limit (33 in a 300 when the really criminal people, the sort who cause 'accidents' like this dseem to 'get away with murder' untouched.

I hope that this "33 in a 300" was a misprint.... if NOT could you please tell Schumi where it is.

Squidlips says: Sat 31st Jan 2004, 03:18 PM
I think the registration of the mondeo should have been left in the message. The more people looking for this car the better, if it was stolen then I think the owner would probably appreciate having all of us keeping a lookout for it. But if it was the owner who was driving it at the time then they don't deserve to be protected and they should be shamed.
I would like to know where the 300mph speed limit is too, I would like to speed test my bike!!:p

Maxla says: Sat 31st Jan 2004, 03:29 PM
As a bystander to the rescue, I can tell you that the mondeos registration could be seen by anyone....... cuz it was left in the gutter at the side of the road:D

By the way, the passenger in the car that was hit didnt seem too badly hurt, and he was actually out of the car when the paras arrived.

Squidlips says: Sat 31st Jan 2004, 03:35 PM
I guess we only have to look for a slightly battered mondeo! I'm glad to hear that no one was badly hurt, small miracles hey..

Does anyone know what was happening on Duke Street between Hampton Road and Sefton Street between 9 and 10 last night (Friday)?

Willow says: Sat 31st Jan 2004, 07:01 PM
The Mondeo would have been taken away by the Police for the SOCO's to have a look over.

If you wanna go and find it, look around the local scrap yards.

pedoja says: Sat 31st Jan 2004, 07:06 PM
Why would anyone want to do that?

It seems to me that the people who are victims of crime like the men in the scimitar, come of second best. The driver and passengers who fled the seen if caught will recive a slap on the wrist and a poxy fine. were is the justice in that.
