Southport Fishermen and Lifeboats
Just thought they deserve a thread.
The most famous Disaster was the Mexico on December 9th 1886.
There were only 2 survivors of The Southport Lifeboat, The Eliza Fernley.
This has been well documented by the exhibition at the Botanic Museum and Andrew Farthing's updated booklet but it would be interesting to hear from descendents and relatives.

I found the "fishing fleet trapped in ice" pic absolutely amazing.
Most people don't take global warming too seriously, but I have never seen the sea (locally) frozen like that.
Is there anyone out there who has seen the sea frozen at Southport, and if so, when?

Fishermen
Henry Wright was born November 1811 South Hawes. married Ann Robinson at St. Cuthberts 31.12.1832. and died 4. St. Lukes Road, 26.1.1891. Henry was a fisherman, he spent most of his life in the Hawesside area but by 1881 most of the Wrights had moved to East ST and Barton St. area.
His Children were William 1833, Alice 1841, John 1838, Henry 1841, William 1850, James 1852, William 1856.
This photo is one of a pair which were used to make portraits of Henry and Ann unfortunately trace was lost of them 20 years ago. If anyone recognises Henry please let me know, we can now trace most of his ancestors and descendents, which is not bad going with a name like Wright. Margaret.

Southport Fishermen
From Barbara Taylor, Southport Visiter April 1981.
Around the turn of the century something like a hundred fishing smacks used to work from Southport... many of them owned by the Southport fishermen, others by Marshsiders.
There were still about 70 of them as late as 1920... but the channel was starting to silt up and by 1927 there were only two...The Lily owned by Jack Rigby of St. Lukes Road and William Rigby of Hart Street, and The Susannah owned by Jack Rigby of St Lukes Road and 'Old Copper' Robinson of Boundary Street.
Fire in 1933 robbed Southport of part of the seaward end of its pier, considerably shortening it ...the 'Big Hole' dried up.....the 'port' of Southport ceased to exist.
The boats had to go elsewhere. and Jack Rigby operated out of Crossens, fishing until his death in 1945... the last of the Southport fishermen.

My Mother was a Wright and here is a pic of her father, my Grandad.
Dick Wright, Canning Road, among others, finally of Chester Road.
He was married to Agnes and they had 5 children ...... Lilian, Hilda, Dick, Dorothy and Margery
My Grandad used to drive Trams and then Southport Corporation Buses.

An earlier pic of Grandad and his conductor by their Tram.

The Edith and Annie Lifeboat.
On 26th June 1899 the Coxswain William Robinson 64 and son John Robinson 44 and son in law Frederick Rigby 37 were endeavouring to change the moorings of the lifeboat. They were in a punt containing the anchor and chains, when the little boat capsized and of the six persons these 3 were drowned. Subscriptions raised £1068. 6s. 10d each widow getting £16. 10s per annum and the children 2s. 3d per week each until they attained the age of 16 yrs.

Southport Shrimpers
I have an old family bible that lists a family of Wrights births, don't know how I am related to them, not had time to research it yet. (one of those jobs I intend to do)
Inside the bible are various bits of paper, one of which is a newspaper cutting of 2 ladies at Preston Market selling shrimps
One is a Mrs Wright and the other is a Mrs Marshall
Very similar to the picture posted, it says that they have been selling shrimps there for over 33 years. I think it is the 2 ladies on the left of the photo.
