Southport Historic Car Rally Programme 2003
The Southport Motor Club, known as the British Beach Racing Club, was formed in the late 19th Century, running events long before Brooklands was built in 1907. All the motoring pioneers race here such as the Hon. CS Rolls, Citreon and SF Edge when up to 200 entries were recorded for the 50 and 100 mile races.
In 1926 de Hane Segrave arrived in Southport with his famous Sunbeam, shattering the world speed record on Birkdale Sands in excess of 155mph. to international acclaim.
1928 was vintage year for the Club. On June 23rd the Hundred Mile Race attracted a crowd of over 100,000 spectators to the beach, excited by the presence of one Capt. Malcolm Campbell. However, the International Motor Rally and Concours d’ Elegance held over the weekend of September 20/21st September 1928 surpassed anything seen at that time on the Continent with 320 vehicles on display-names to saver include Alvis, Arrol Astor, Auburn, Bentley, Bugatti, Crossley, Delage, Darracq, Delauney Belleville, Hispano Suiza, Isotta Fraschini, Lanchester, Lagonda, Moon, Marmon, Rolls Royce, Stutz, Sunbeam, and Southport’s own Vulcan. (The bulk of these cars are now held in private collections or museums).
Many distinguished owners featured in “Who’s Who” and were the cream of English society or the aristocracy; Men like Viscount Curzon (soon to be Lord Howe) Capt. HRS Birkin, LT Col Charles Jarrott, Mr Gordon England, Sir Walter Windham, Mr Derwant Hall Caine. The ladies were simply dazzling. An elegant Mrs Kathleen May arrived, unflustered, from John O Groats, Mrs Diana Strickland alighted from a 13.9 hp Star, fresh from driving coast to coast, alone across the continent of Africa and sure of her place in history, whilst the stunning actress Ms Paddie Naismith swept in from London and lost no time in dispensing drinks to admirers from the cocktail bar in her 13hp Ballot.
In this event, 75 years on, we celebrate this weekend at Victoria Park with a wide menu of vehicles to suit all tastes dating from 1908. Over 400 entry forms have been submitted, pride of place going to Jaguar Cars who are celebrating 40 years of Ford/ Jaguar manufacturing at the Halewood plant with a huge collection of vehicles on display from the SS to the present day.
Pictured below is one of many Jaguar cars on display today. There is going to be at least three dozen jags tomorrow (Sunday 21st Sept 2003).
There will be some surprises……………………………..
Following judging by the panel of experts, 16 silver cups will be presented by companies or individuals, as in 1928. In the case of some companies, history will be truly be repeating itself.
Victoria Park is an integral part of Southport. You can picnic in the Park, stroll to the beach, visit Pleasureland, Ocean Plaza, the Dunes (baths), the Zoo, sample “the Lord Street experience” with its fine shops and cafes, or take tea in a comfortable hotel lounge. Why not “Promenade” like they did 75 years ago. Enjoy your weekend with us as Southport finds its soul again………………………….
