... In a few months time.
This is the Chapel Theatre within Southport College's grounds. A beautiful building with the most amazing acoustics. I have been to concerts there and you can literally "hear a pin drop"!
Southport College, I understand wish to demolish this fine building in favour of a modern purpose built (media centre) hall .
I.E. A tin shed.
Can I please ask... Does anybody have any info on this formerly important Southport Chapel? We must protect it and save it from the accountants who would demolish it in the name of prudence.
To improve it's facilities would be progress. To demolish it would be vandalism.
Please if you have any knowledge of the Chapel Theatre or the Chapel please post it on here. We need to save it.

Here's one occasion I was privileged to enjoy at the Chapel Theatre. Ian Parker.

A very beautiful building, i`m very surprised they have been given permission to demolish it! Maybe the relevant conservation groups or departments havn`t been informed?
Too many buildings just thrown up as fast as possible these days, the likes of this chapel may never be built again unless privately funded, it will be a real shame if it is lost. Any close up pic`s of the stonework?

Would anyone have any ideas about preventing this happening. Can anyone apply for "listed building" status? Or are there protection orders available? I'm really interested because this will be a tragedy if nothing was done.
I presume that, being part of Southport College puts the Chapel on private land but it must've had public use in the past.
Any advice would be welcome.

The Chapel within Southport College grounds
Does anybody know anything about this chapel? It is on Mornington Rd in Southport College's grounds. I have heard a rumour that The College wish to demolish it and replace it with a modern building.
Any info or advice about preventing this impending tragedy would be of great help.
Otherwise this picture will be on this forum while we all say "Do you remember that beautiful chapel they demolished in 2006?"
Please help.

I'm not sure if it is or ever has been a chapel.
When I was at the college it was the refectory (canteen).
Splendid building though. They can't be allowed to demolish it.
An old 1927 map shows it as a Sunday School presumably connected to the church that stood where the current modern college building stands facing Mornington Road, directly opposite Vulcan Street.

I can't believe that they're going to be allowed to demolish it. It was built as a church in the mid 1800s. Surely it has listed status??

I remember it as the students union offices and food hall in the 70's.
Lovely place...fond memories ..... imagine...learning to play three card brag and poker in an old church

Yep it was the refectory when I was there. I recall lounging about on many occasion in the student union room upstairs.
Never realised what a great building it was though. Been many moons since I've seen it again. Great photo.

If it hasn't been applied for in the past... it has now.

Ok! Well, from info received today ...
The story so far is that this was the Chapel to the church that Mr Brightside refers to, it was built in the mid 1800's.
Students at the College have been told that it will be demolished to enable more modern Drama facilities and extra spaces in the present refectory by expanding the building (which would be at the expense of the Chapel )
This must not happen. There must be a way of expanding the refectory without demolishing this fine building.
More photos will follow.

Guzzlie..... It might be worthwhile searching Sefton's online planning applications. If it's not been approved as yet then you can surely lodge an objection? If it's now awaiting approval as a listed building that alone should support an objection.

this kind of carry on whenever change is proposed is over the top.
it may look nice, pretty and artistic but can it be used cost effectivly, probably not.
an old building that has passed its useful life and the cost of redesign -refurbishment unviable.
to interfere will pile on costs to the developer and those involved.
if you want to save it put the money up or stay out of it.
changes happen, just live with it.
if they have tried different uses and cant make it work let it go.

My daughter actually attends "performing Arts" in this building, it is does not have enough space for students to do their work in. Apparently the plans have been available to view a while, I just wonder why people did not create when the main church building was demolished. I would though point out that this building is within the grounds, and is not visible from the outside. It is also very cold and difficult to keep warm for the students who use it. It is also used for offices to do with different aspects of the college.

I remember the church being demolished where the newer part of the art college is mainly because my elder brother had his bike crushed by a digger on the site. He got a rocketing when we got home. My dad got some of the stone to make a rockery in our front garden as well.I think they wanted to pull the church hall down at the time but for some reason it didn,t go ahead. Was dukes house built about the same time?On the other side (church street) was a big house that was pulled down.We often played in it on a saturday morning on the way back from the odeon.
The refectory also holds happy memories from the late seventies being at the tech college the rag days with various stunts eating dry cream crackers and seem to remember someone sat in a bath of cold baked beans? yuk!

I don't know when the main church was demolished but can understand how that would perhaps not be an ideal building within a College.
This is different. No money has been spent on the Chapel in years and as for being cold, the heating works very well! Why will a new tin shed be warmer? As for the plans being available to view for a while... How long is a "while"? "Where were they available to view?"
I've heard "rumours" about this vandalism now and I will act on them.
I thought there would be negative responses to this post but never mind... One can only do one's best.

So if some of the college's current accomodation is inadequate why did they not refurbish or rebuild on the Drill Hall site (which was given to the college free of charge by the council) instead of flogging it to a housing developer?
