Southport and District Angling Association (SDAA) ban Gord Burton & Paul Cobb for life
World famous ‘Pike’ fisherman, Gordon Burton and Southport angler, Paul Cobb have received lifetime bans from fishing SDAA waters. Members voted in favour of the bans at last nights SDAA AGM (Tuesday 17th April 2007) held at the Fleetwood Hesketh Sports Club in Churchtown, Southport.

Gord Burton said:” There is no proof that the fish in question were caught in SDAA waters”
49 members attended the AGM
Ron Anderson, of ‘Tight Lines’ fishing tackle shop (Forest Road, Southport) had his SDAA day ticket concession licence withdrawn by the committee. It’s understood that Mr Hurst (SDAA) said his licence was withdrawn for signing a recent SDAA motion.

SDAA inform Ron by letter
When interviewed this morning (Wednesday 18th April 2007) Ron Anderson was clearly upset by the SDAA decision to revoke his licence and declined to comment on the matter.

SGB understands that Ron was asked by the SDAA Committee not to publish any photographs of Gordon Burton (with fish from SDAA waters) in a local newspaper, which he adhered to.
Ron recently sponsored the SDAA Centenary Match to the tune of £50, and last year donated over £3,000 in fishing trophies & prizes in the area.
A spokesperson for the SDAA said” Last nights AGM was well represented by 49 members and the club is looking to go forward in the future”, “Ron can still apply to become a member of the SDAA”
SDAA fishing ticket concessions can now be obtained from a Churchtown newsagents shop (to be confirmed)

Poor ol' Gordy - it seems this has been going on for years, and it's personal.
Time for a shake-up at the SDAA I feel. Members do count, after all, the fee's are what keeps the commitee in their respective places. It's not run for the benefit of them but the Members, who have rights, like any other club.
A new secretary? Mr Bannister resigned as I hear it? Is this a good thing? Who is actually responsible for the alleged illegal stocking? Who OK'd it at comittee level? or were they stocked by Gordy? I know he's partial to using decent baits for his piking!
It needs answers, not to just the guys who've been banned, a simple letter stating the facts as the committee see it would tip oil on troubled waters. And dig them out of this situation. The way it sounds, it's like Putin is in charge over there - I expect some evil looking leather clad starzi-bailiffs in place for the coming season on the Sluice! Maybe that's whats needed in todays climate - having immegrant workers removing our fish stocks has also become a problem, has the club committee looked into this? Or, left it to the E.A. questions questions shame I missed the AGM I think I would have caused it to run on into the wee hours!
Gordy will still be catching big girls and Paul sounds like he's onto some good fishing at other waters - the club will miss members of Gordy's type and experience, anyone who's had the pleasure of mulling over the fishing with him will testify
Chin up fella's - the answers will come out inna wash!

I was at the AGM, and I can confirm that whilst the committee may wish to ban Gord Burton and Paul Cobb for life, no vote was taken. This is factually incorrect. This ban is not in place with the support of the membership.
One member asked the committee to give an assurance that no member would ever be expelled in future without being given the reason why they were being banned, and being given the opportunityto stand before the committee and put their own side of the story (i.e., defend themselves, like we all have the right to do in court)
At this suggestion, malcolm bannister became apopleptic with rage, and had to be calmed down by fellow committe members. he stated clearly that he would never give such an assurance. For me this speaks volumes about how the SDAA has been run. As a dictatorship who do not feel they are accountable at all to the membership.
Lets all now support the new secretary and new committee members in bringing this club into the 21st century, and getting it operating as a peoples club, and not the plaything of a small number of committee members.
Incidentally, it was stated clearly at the meeting that Paul Cobb was banned for:
1) Poaching
2)Fishing with a Poacher
3) Leaving letter
4) Informing the Environment Agency that the barbel had been stocked in club waters
5) bringing the club into disrepute.
Perhaps Paul would like to respond to these accusations?
