Rodwell nets the first Wembley winner
Jack Rodwell said he was ‘absolutely delighted’ to have written his name into the record books by scoring at Wembley Stadium.
The youngster from Southport bagged the first winning goal at the new £757 million arena on Saturday to ensure England Under-16’s were victorious against their Spanish counterparts.
An attendance of 28,210 saw the second official fixture at the new Home of Football and among the crowd were Jack’s friends and family.

Having been called from the bench late in the first-half, the Everton defender scored the game’s only goal on 52 minutes. After cleverly controlling a Dean Parrett cross at the far post, Jack’s first shot was blocked, but he made no mistake with his second attempt.
The Birkdale High Student normally captains the side, but a hamstring injury sustained while playing for his club meant he began on the bench having previously been ruled out of England’s matches in the Montaigu Tournament in France.
Spain are regarded as one of the most talented sides in their age bracket, but England were slick in possession, constructed the better of the chances and as a result of Jack’s goal, they became the first team to triumphantly climb the 107 steps to the Royal Box.

‘Just to step out at Wembley is brilliant,’ said 16-year old Jack. ‘The main thing was the win, but to score is a bonus and it was absolutely brilliant.
‘I could tell by the look on the faces of my family that they were happy and I really enjoyed the moment.’
The goal crowned an impressive individual season for Jack with both club and country. Having established himself in Everton’s Under-18 team, he also became one of the youngest ever representatives to feature in the Goodison Park reserve side.
As captain of the Young Lions, he lifted the prestigious Victory Shield in December and is set to lead the same group of players in the Under-17 UEFA qualifiers next season.

FROM THE EVERTON WEBSITE
Jack Rodwell crowned a memorable Wembley appearance with the only goal as England under 16s beat Spain 1-0.
Rodwell, currently at Everton's academy, came on as a half time substitute and netted just 12 minutes into the second half on Saturday afternoon.
He collected a cross from Tottenham's Dean Parett and finished well at the second attempt.
The centre half was the first Everton player to turn out at the new Wembley stadium, where over 28,000 fans watched the action.
Earlier this season Rodwell skippered England to Victory Shield success, but was ruled out of the recent Montaigu tournament - in which the Three Lions were runners up - through injury.
Good on you Jack
Lets hope you don't end up kissing a Man U shirt at Goodison
