New colour scheme for Park & Ride buses

Southport.gb.com are giving readers the first pictures of the new Park and Ride buses that will provide a regular service to take passengers into the heart of Southport Town Centre from the new £5 million pound Kew Park and Ride.

New colours for park and ride buses

Contractors are adding the finishing touches to the facility which will intercept traffic travelling to Southport from the east.

The Kew Park and ride will be open from 7.30am till 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 6.30pm on Sundays, and at just £1 per car, Southport's park and ride services are among the cheapest in the UK.

The official opening will be Monday 5th November 2007.

Roads are cleaned ready for the official opening

Taken long enough though. we use Park and Rides around the country. I think Cambridge has the best. Half a dozen scattered round the city. all well used. Getting the buses out of that island by B & Q will be interesting.

Brilliant Colours.

Shame the road won't be available for use,to get to Crowland Street, instead of using Meols Cop Road.

>>.. we use Park and Rides around the country.,,>>

I think you will find that Southport almost certainly operated the first park and ride service in the UK several decades ago.

it ran for just one Saturday at the beginning of December for the Christmas shoppers - it proved such a success that it ran on all the Saturdays in December the following year.

After that the scheme just took off and was widely adopted by many other towns and cities.

Its a shame it was not opened before the Chapel St disaster !

Still need a road bridge from ASDA to LIDL

My husband has been called in to rescue the disaster of a paint job last minute, thats his van in picture 2.
Pedoja- Why will the road not be available for use to get to Crowland street??

Stupot, Southport was an early town to offer Park and Ride, but it was not the first. I think, but I am not sure that Oxford has the claim on that. Southport had the support of the shops, who sponsored the service for the run up to Christmas on a few Saturdays.
Southport Park and Ride at a £1 per car, is good value, and is encouraging for the motorist to abandon his car. Chester is about £ 1.60 return per person.
P & R has to be attractive, secure and user friendly. Southport can rest assure on that lot.

Stupot here is a picture I took outside the Pleasureland many years ago, when the Park and Ride was in its infancy. A Leyland National about to collect a queue of passengers.

Drivers will probably use the same method as the rest of us to get out onto the roundabout GreyWolf - just close yer eyes put your foot down and pray ! OTS and Roving Eye will have to work out a shift system to record all the "minor rtc's"

Oh boy, that bus is beautiful! Remember when we campaigned against the ditching of the old Cream n Red in favour of Sickly Green? And here it is back again. Lovely. Well done, whoever's idea that was.

Stella33 not sure how it will work but this link says it has been designed to stop it being used as a rat run.

Merseybus and Southport and District also did them in red and cream.
Well done to Arriva for not sticking to corporate policy for once.

Now if our "Sit on the fence" council thought about this, a bit like traffic in town post Chapel St, they may have noticed a railway line ?

But then again who needs a train every 2 weeks !

Anybody know if you can use the buses even if you don't park a car. For the residents of nearby Blowick/HighPark it will save £2 per return trip to town!!

Can't find out when Oxford's park and ride scheme first started, but Southport's has been operating for decades either in part-time or full-time mode.

I'm pretty certain that the success of the pilot scheme all those years ago eventually lead to the rest of the country taking the idea up.

Greywolf says: Thu 1st Nov 2007, 04:24 PM
AQs I say, Cambridge has a good scheme. 5?? Park and Rides running 7 days a week. Hope this one works, but once again closing at 6 30. So, late night shopping over Christmas. You use the Park and Ride, and....... Whoops. Still, there is a bacon butty bar near B & Q. No, that closes early.

Why not open the road through to Crowland Street to help the flow of traffic on Meols cop Road at peak times and the rest of the day for that matter. and Hospital workers can park there all day for a £1 that will be a great saving over the year.
