I would suggest St Cuthberts as that was the first Church in Southport.
I am sure I have heard it somewhere too.

As far as I know there is no parish church of Southport. St. Cuthbert's is the parish church of North Meols (which amounts to the same thing).

i thought a parish was the area around a church..for instance if a couple wish to be married at a certain church, its preferable for at least one of them to reside within the parish of that church..st johns covers crossens..up to an area where st cuthberts takes over...emanuel has its own 'catchment' area..as with holy trinity ..as i say ..thats what i thought..i may be totaly wrong !!

That's true, Harmony, although geographical parish bounds have become rather fluid. Each parish has a parish church, but each deanery (for example North Meols) has a parish church, in this case St. Cuthebert's, which is acknowledged as the parish church of that area. And as all the Southport CofE churches are in North Meols Deanery, St. Cuthbert's is recognized as the parish church of North Meols, or in other words, Southport.

Thanks for all the replies. Someone in New Zealand asked and although I would say St Cuthberts is the parish church of North Meols I wasn't sure about Christchurch.
I did find something in an old paper yesterday while looking for other things but it was an advert (1961) for Churchtown. There is a picture of St Cuthberts and underneath it says the parish Church of Southport.
I shall pass all your replies onto her.

The area of North Meols extends from Banks to Birkdale and includes Ainsdale and Formby.no adequate explanation has been given to the origin of the name Southport,The name came into use 30 years ago.The Ecclesiastical designation of the Rural Deanery is that of North Meols, and everything that takes us back to the ages of the past, centres around the ancient parish church of North Meols ,dedicated to St.Cuthbert,at Churchtown.
(Joseph Pearce Pearce 1922.).
