This drawing is about 1878 it shows The Blundell Arms before the porch was built .The adjacent cottage with thatched roof .This roof was was remade with slat in about 1909.

That's great tiptop1!
I work in Formby now and there are so many interesting things I'm discovering about the area. Thank you.

1973 - Why is there a house in Birky Lane called the "Lifeboat"
Clipping from Formby Times November 21st 1973.
"Why" ask many Formby residents "is a house in Birky Lane called the Lifeboat?"
The answer is that the house was built on the site of the cottage, above, like the Bay Horse, which was of similar size, it was also a pub. "The Lifeboat" could be discerned in faded letters until about 1953. The ancient barn beside the cottage was stone roofed, and tradition had it that horses from the barn used to be hurried down Raven Meols Lane to help haul the local lifeboat into the sea.

Tiptop1
That is so interesting. These sketches are by Muriel Sibley who moved to Formby in 1949 and so loved the place she stayed until her death in 1993.
She left all her 2000+ slides of old Formby and 800+ sketches to the Formby Civic Society (FCS).
I got early retirement 2 years ago and joined the FCS and having a liking for computers set about digitising their archives. The Sibley archives have now been completed.
The FCS have also inherited 30+ scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings ( possibly 10,000 articles) going back, at the moment, to 1960. I have digitised 16 volumes so far with a full Key Word Index and digital copies of 5 of the volumes using my digital camera. The indexing is very time consuming but I have found photographing say 40 pages takes only about 10 minutes and means that we can retrieve any article in seconds.
The Society gets many request for information from all over the world and not only have I been able to make access possible but have been able to get my hands on all this HISTORY.
It is hoped to enhance our Web site so that all these images can be viewed but this is work in progress at the moment.
Courtesy of the FCS some related images are below.
Pic 1 Is Muriel Sibley
Pic 2 The barn in Birkey Lane where the old lifeboat was stored
Pic 3 The Blundell Arms in 1903 which is a colour version of the one you posted
Pic 4 A Formby Times article about Muriel Sibley dated December 2003
Pic 5 The Pavilion in about 1949. This was burnt down by vandals and was rebuilt.
tiptop do your cuttings cover around the year 1973 ?. If they are a lot earlier I would be happy to borrow them to add to our archive and would of course let you have a DVD of the results (for free).
The FCS have at least 5 VHS Videos of old Formby and I would guess 1000's of other bits and pieces. I am still working on a complete index !!!!!!, just need more time.
Muriel Sibley FCS

I have a brown folder full of scrapes of paper , some I can date others are just picters torn from the news sheet . If you want to see them or if they are of any use I will give them willingly . I was so sad to see them discarded .

I have a lovely signed photo copy of a sketch by Muriel Sibley called 'shrimpers setting out' and another just called 'Lord St'
which I was lucky enough to buy for 50p at Barnadoes.
I can't show them because they have been framed.

A sketch made available from a friend Mr MC, of the Quality Shop in Chapel Lane Formby in 1975 and more interestingly Muriel Sibley notes on the history of the building. (The resolution limitation of this site may make this difficult to read)

Below is Muriel Sibley's original slide dated 1960 from which I assume she did the sketch. Courtesy of the FCS archive.

Very interesting photos. Does anyone have a picture of the old Formby lighthouse? I remember as a young boy always looking for the lighthouse when we went to Liverpool by train.

Hope this will be of interest.
Demolished in about 1941 as there was a fear it was being used by German bombers to guide them to Liverpool

Remarkable.
I remember Eccles farm on Liverpool Rd.
It's quite scary looking at some of those pic's and captions just how fast thing change... and I'm not just talking building here.
The way of life, (farmers, labourer, cattle pens etc.) have all just VANISHED in such a short period of time. To be replaced by what (ever)! It's amazing to live outside the UK and watch the imported TV programs, Foyle, Heartbeat etc. etc. All based in the good ol' days. This is the image that the UK is so keen to export, that's received so affectionately by the foreigners yet at the same time, so quickly discarded by the average British county planner and developer.
I'm not against progress and change, on the contrary... but it's amazing that to "progress" we must demolish the physical past, without trace.. and then having it live on via big business, TV export drama. What a shame.

In The Shed
I used ti live in a flat above the shops in the 2nd pic about 20 years ago. Even then parking was a nightmare, but great place to go out for a night on the town.

In the shed- the pic of Shellfield Rd cottages brings back memories. I almost bought the end cottage on the left some years ago for 45,000pounds. It has a large modern extension at the back, and an incredibly steep staircase in the front room to a loft bedroom. It`s next to the passage through to Lytham Rd.
It had been, and maybe still is a rental property, at the time owned by a pub landlord. His first name was Jeff, but I can`t remember his last name. The pub may have been the Mount.
